Body mass index (BMI) is a statistical measure of body fat based upon the height and weight of adults, 20 years and older.

      BMI Categories:

  • Underweight = less than 18.5
  • Normal weight = 18.5 to 24.9
  • Overweight = 25 to 29.9
  • Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater
Underweight: Your BMI is less than 18.5, indicating your weight is in the underweight category for adults of your height. You may not be getting enough of the right foods. This can lead to a weakened immune system, fragile bones, and other related health problems.

Normal: Your BMI is , indicating your weight is within the normal range for adults of your height.  Maintaining a healthy weight may reduce the risk of chronic diseases associated with overweight and obesity.

Overweight: Your BMI is , indicating your weight is in the overweight category for adults of your height.
 
People who are overweight or obese are at higher risk for chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol.

Anyone who is overweight should try to avoid gaining additional weight. Additionally, if you are overweight with other risk factors (such as high LDL cholesterol, low HDL cholesterol, or high blood pressure), you should try to lose weight. Even a small weight loss (just 10% of your current weight) may help lower the risk of disease. Talk with your healthcare provider to determine appropriate ways to lose weight.

Obesity: Your BMI is , indicating your weight is in the obese category for adults of your height.
